Brahms’s First Symphony is yet another warhorse of the concert stage and of the CD tray ( CD performances, with duplications included). Brahms’s First is a masterpiece for which we always need another CD if it has something new to offer. Celibidache and the Cologne RSO do indeed offer us a new and rewarding experience.

Celibidache was without question one of the most important and original conductors in recent memory. He was a perfectionist who disliked what he perceived to be the synthetic sounds created in the modern recording studio, preferring the immediacy of the concert platform and the interaction with a live audience.

Celibidache recorded the cycle of Brahms symphonies twice, first for DG in the mid ’s and EMI in (Symphony 3), (Symphony 4), and (Symphony 2). His EMI set was with the Munich Philharmonic, a superior orchestra to DG’s Stuttgart orchestra/5(14).

Sergiu Celibidache leads the Munich Philharmonic in the German Requiem and Symphony No. 1 by Johannes Brahms on this two-disc EMI recording made in and , respectively. I have performed the Requiem and know it well. The Requiem receives a solemn but dynamic performance, and yes, it is slow - the slowest I have heard/5(5).
